LET'S DESIGN: SONIC MAKER

Welcome everyone, to a new series I'd like to call "Let's Design" - name not final. In this series, I throw around concept ideas for a Sonic game I'd be interested in seeing - and constructing a game pitch out of that!

Without further ado, let's begin with a popular want from Sonic fans: a level-creation Sonic game. Sonic Maker.

I'm going to use Super Mario Maker and its sequel, along with the upcoming fan-game Sonic Studio as my basis for this game.

The name of this Sonic Maker would be.. Sonic's Sandbox.

Part 1: Level Creation

Game Styles

There would be a total of five game styles:

• Sonic 1

• Sonic 2

• Sonic 3

• Sonic Advance

• Sonic Mania

Sonic 3 would be a combination of 3 & Knuckles, Advance would be a combination of the entire advance trilogy and Mania would be a combination of Mania & CD.

Level Styles

The most notable difference between Sonic and Mario levels is that Mario uses level types and Sonic has more varied, but somewhat similar, locations - for example, Mario may have eight grassland stages, but Sonic will have Green Hill, Emerald Hill, etc. This is why it is important to have variety. These are the base level themes, and every game will expand on them to make a more personalised level:

• Grassland

• Desert

• Snow

• Underground

• Water

• Forest

• Metropolis A

• Metropolis B

• Casino

• Sky

Extra Themes (Mini-Themes):

• Final Boss Area

Here are the zones that each game style will use for these level themes, in order of the themes listed above:

Sonic 1:

• Green Hill Zone

• Desert Hill Zone (new, based on Sonic Forces)

• Snow Hill Zone (new)

• Marble Zone

• Labyrinth Zone*

• Wing Fortress Zone*

• Death Egg Zone

Sonic 3:

• Marble Garden Zone

• Sandopolis Zone

• Ice Cap Zone

• Lava Reef Zone

• Hydrocity Zone

• Angel Island Zone*

• Launch Base Zone

• Death Egg Zone

• Carnival Night Zone

• Flying Battery Zone*

• Doomsday Zone

Sonic Advance:

• Desert Zone (new)

• Ice Mountain Zone [SA1]

• Underground Zone (new)

• Leaf Forest Zone [SA2]

• Forest Zone (new)

• Metallic Madness Zone [CD]

• Titanic Monarch Zone [Mania]

• Studiopolis Zone [Mania]

• Stardust Speedway Zone [CD]

• Egg Reverie Zone [Mania]

*All of these stages have alternate forms, these being:

• Labyrinth Zone > Scrap Brain Act 3 Labyrinth

• Hill Top Zone > Snowy Hill Top Zone

• Mystic Cave Zone > Hidden Palace Zone

• Wing Fortress Zone > Sky Chase Zone

• Angel Island Zone > Mushroom Hill Zone

• Flying Battery Zone > Sky Sanctuary Zone

• Mirage Saloon Zone [Mania] > Desert Dazzle Zone [CD]

Every zone's name can be customised by the player, and an act number can be added. For example:

• Rural Ruins Zone, Act 4

Sonic Advance styled levels are the only ones that don't require 'Zone' to be added at the end. Any stage can also not have an act number at all, for example:

• Mad Factory Zone

Every level also has a 'night theme' available, similar to Super Mario Maker 2. However, these are only aesthetic and do not affect gameplay.

Music

Music would be able to be chosen for each individual stage, and the creator can use any track in the game with any stage. Music featured also includes music from stages that aren't in the game.

The music featured is:

• Every zone theme from Sonic 1

• Every zone theme from Sonic 2

• Every zone theme from Sonic 3

• Every zone theme from Sonic & Knuckles

• Every zone theme from Sonic Advance

• Every zone theme from Sonic Advance 2

• Every zone theme from Sonic Advance 3

• Every zone theme from Sonic CD

• Every zone theme from Sonic Mania

• Boss themes, bonus stage themes and final boss themes from all games listed above

Night variations of every song would also be included, which would be slightly different from the day versions. Hill Top Zone would also have a more winter-themed alternate track, to represent its new aesthetic.

Cameo tracks would also appear, these from other games in the series. Every track would be instrumental, and they are as follows:

• Emerald Coast (Sonic Adventure)

• Windy Valley (Sonic Adventure)

• City Escape (Sonic Adventure 2)

• Pumpkin Hill (Sonic Adventure 2)

• Seaside Coast (Sonic Heroes)

• Rooftop Run (Sonic Unleashed)

• Planet Wisp (Sonic Colours)

• Speed Highway, Act 1 (Sonic Generations)

• Crisis City, Act 1 (Sonic Generations)

• Windy Hill Zone (Sonic Lost World)

• Frozen Factory Zone (Sonic Lost World)

• Lost Valley (Sonic Forces)

• Sunset Heights (Sonic Forces)

Enemies

Every game style would have roughly 30 (mostly) unique enemies, 3 from every level style. An example of this is:

Green Hill Zone (Sonic 1) - Motobug, Buzz Bomber, Chopper

One enemy from every 'cameo' Sonic game mentioned above would also be included, these being:

• Cop Speeder (Sonic Adventure)

• Gun Beetle (Sonic Adventure 2)

• Egg Pawn (Sonic Heroes)

• Nightmare (Sonic Unleashed)

• Spinner (Sonic Colours)

• Yeti (Sonic Lost World)

• Egg Tank (Sonic Forces)

Bosses

There would be five bosses to represent every game style, and one final boss for each.

Sonic 1:

• Green Hill Zone Boss

• Marble Zone Boss

• Star Light Zone Boss

• Green Hill Zone Boss (harder ver.)

• Marble Zone Boss (harder ver.)

• Final Zone Boss

Sonic 2:

• Emerald Hill Zone Boss

• Casino Night Zone Boss

• Mystic Cave Zone Boss

• Oil Ocean Zone Boss

• Silver Sonic

• Death Egg Robot

Sonic 3:

• Angel Island Zone Boss 2

• Hydrocity Zone Boss 2

• Ice Cap Zone Boss 2

• Big Arms

• Knuckles the Echidna

• Doomsday Boss

Sonic Advance:

• Egg Ball

• Egg Hammer Tank

• Egg Snake

• Egg Spider

• EGG X

• Super Egg Robot

Sonic Mania:

• Studiopolis Zone Boss 2

• Press Garden Zone Boss 2

• Mirage Saloon Zone Boss 2

• Titanic Monarch Zone Boss 2

• Metal Sonic (CD and Mania variants)

• Lava Reef Zone Boss 2 (bonus)

• Egg Reverie Zone Boss

Note: Sonic Advance bosses would only be compatible with Sonic Advance stages.

Part 2: Level Sharing

Good levels should be shared, right? Well, that is exactly what will happen here. Users can set course descriptions, tags and difficulties and then upload them.

When players play those stages online, they can rate the course out of seven (emeralds) and download the course for offline play. Downloaded courses cannot be uploaded.

Every level will have a Level ID, which is the most simple way to share the levels, but users will also be able to search by name, level creator and game style.

Part 3: Level Playing

There are three main ways for users to play levels:

• Speedrun

• Sandbox Challenge

• Online Play

Speedrun is a simple romp through 12 select stages from Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Mania - with the goal of reaching the end of every level in a specific amount of time. Every level is a speedrun.

The Speedrun stages are:

• Green Hill Zone Act 3

• Spring Yard Zone Act 1

• Star Light Zone Act 2

• Chemical Plant Zone Act 1

• Aquatic Ruin Zone Act 1

• Hill Top Zone Act 2

• Angel Island Zone Act 2

• Ice Cap Zone Act 1

• Mushroom Hill Zone Act 1

• Flying Battery Zone Act 1

• Mirage Saloon Zone Act 2

• Titanic Monarch Zone Act 3 (Mania Final Boss)

Sandbox Challenge is like Mario Maker 2's Endless Mode, an all-you-can-play where you keep playing randomly selected user-made levels (based on difficulty) until you get a game over.

Online Play is a simple system where players can search for or browse levels. Levels played through Online Play can also be played with two players or through Online Multiplayer of up to three people.

Characters

There would be six playable characters:

• Sonic

• Tails

• Knuckles

• Amy

• Mighty

• Ray

All characters would be compatible with all styles, however in the Sonic Advance style Mighty would be replaced by Blaze, and Ray with Cream.

DLC

Ah, yes, Downloadable Content. Its inevitable. What would a DLC update to Sonic's Sandbox add? Well..

• One new level theme

• Three new enemies, per game style, in that theme

• One new character

• 2 cameo tracks: one from Sonic 06 and the other from Team Sonic Racing.

What would these new additions be? That's for you to decide.

Conclusion

Well, that's everything! Do you agree with my ideas for Sonic Maker? Let me know! I really enjoyed making this blog and plan to make more, so if you have any suggestions, leave them below.

Have a good day everyone. Goodbye!
